On Saturday afternoon, May 25, 2024, the unthinkable happened. 51-year-old Mike Morgan, a Jackson County, Colorado cattle rancher, was struck by lightning. Saturday, May 25th started out like any other day. Even up until the afternoon, when Jackson County, Colorado cattle rancher Mike Morgan went out to feed hay to his cattle. Everything seemed to be routine. Morgan had just spent the better part of the day working on branding. Unexpectedly, tragedy struck when lightning hit Morgan as he fed his cattle from the back of his trailer. Over 100 cow and calves were knocked to the ground from the natural disaster. 34 of those cattle did not survive, along with three calves who also unfortunately passed away.
Colorado Cattle Rancher Mike Morgan’s trailer was struck by the lightning, which sadly resulted in his passing. Fellow Cattle Rancher Thomas Enoff extends his condolences to the Morgan family and the Jackson County, CO community. His Cavvy Foundation, a nonprofit focused on helping ranchers and farm hands facing medical issues and emergencies, shared the story. They also shared that Mike’s wife, who was 200 feet away on horseback, also fell off of her horse due to the lightning strike. RIP Mike Morgan.
